As tempting it is to have a super relaxing weekend in: feet up, take away in hand and trash on TV… it’s equally as exciting to get dressed up, go out and have a laugh. Here’s how you can have a great evening out with friends and/or family… which involves a visit to The Lady Boys of Bangkok.
The Lady Boys of Bangkok has been one of the country’s favourite touring cabaret shows, having seen it visit nearby cities I had never bit the bullet and paid a visit. So when I got invited along I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to see what the buzz is all about.
Considering I was visiting the day before Mother’s Day, who best to invite than my mother? We took this as an opportunity to have a mother-daughter evening, therefore we started our evening with a visit to Bunk for a pre-show cocktail and some incredible food. Fortunately, Bunk is only a few minute walk away from the Market Place where The Sabai Pavilion was located.
The Sabai Pavilion is hard to miss considering it is bright pink – typical Lady Boys of Bangkok style. The Pavilion had a glamorous make over in 2017 and is completely stunning. The set up of the pavilion creates a great atmosphere, from the moment you step in you’re taken all the way to Bangkok. The foyer consists of an area to snap pictures with the Thai themed statues including a TukTuk, a merchandise stand, a bar offering soft and alcoholic drinks, and authentic Thai cuisine, alongside your amenities such as toilets and a smoking area.
Once entering the arena you’re warmly welcomed with more pink and more glitz. Seating is arranged in tables of 8, you’ll be allocated on a table and then the choice of table seating is based on a first come first serve basis in order to get the best view. No matter where you are sat you will see the heat of the entertainment, as the whole arena space is utilised throughout the show.
As for the actual show itself, it is largely accessible for any audience age (18+), gender and disability, with popular music from all eras you’ll be up and dancing without a doubt. The show consists of 16 showgirls from Thailand who happen to be men, their hair, make up and costumes are incredible and you can’t imagine them as anything other than showgirls! As a pre-warning, there are some aspects of audiences participation which is completely hilarious (if you’re not the one on the stage). If the ladyboys are not on stage making you laugh with a comedy sketch, they’re on stage amazing you at their incredible use of props and acting.
As I was browsing in the foyer it was so heartwarming to read that The Ladyboys of Bangkok work closely with Safe Child Thailand raising money based on audience donations to safe-guard and home orphaned children. A previous campaign allowed them to develop a home to rehouse 90 abandoned and orphaned migrant children on the Thailand-Myanmar boarder.
Without any spoilers, here’s a few videos from the performance…
This is such a great night full of entertainment whether you want to sit back and laugh or get up and go crazy having the time of your life. It is a great evening for hen parties or a get together with friends, with special deals when visiting as a group, request a table with champagne.
The tour has only just started in Derby and plan to visiting over 50 more locations between now and November. If you’re interested in buying tickets for future shows you can find them on the website here.
